Old boy Jay Broadhurst is rapidly beginning to make his mark on the UK opera scene. Under the guidance of Mark Wildman at the Royal Northern College of Music, he is the most recent recipient of the prestigious Frederic Cox Award for Singing.

Jay attended Bury Grammar from 2005-2020 and many of you will remember his performances in 'Little Shop of Horrors', 'Les Miserables' and 'Miss Saigon'.

Jay has just been performing the role of Malcolm in the Chelsea Opera Group’s production of Verdi’s 'Macbeth'. This is a second tenor role and is usually performed by someone in the early stages of their career. During the interval, the tenor performing the leading role of Macduff was taken ill and Jay bravely stepped in and took his place. His performance has been greeted with rave reviews lauding him as “thrilling” and “bringing the house down”.

Recent and upcoming engagements include:' Le Prince L’amour des trois oranges' (RNCM Opera), the Grail Knight in  'Parsifal' (Glyndebourne), Turiddu in 'Cavalleria Rusticana' (Occento), Borsa in 'Rigoletto', Un Chef  in 'Le roi de Lahore' (Dorset Opera Festival), Don Curzio in 'Le nozze di Figaro' (Garsington Opera), Lensky in 'Eugene Onegin' (Preston Opera), Tsar Berendeyi in 'The Snow Maiden', King Ouf in 'L’étoile' (RNCM Opera), Spoletta in 'Tosca' (NPO), and the Preacher Bernstein’s Mass (RNCM).

Alongside his operatic engagements this coming season, Jay will also make his debut at Wigmore Hall, performing Schumann’s Dichterliebe, as a Young Artist for the Musician’s Company on 5th May 2026 which is now available to book on the Wigmore Hall website.

Jay is proud to be generously supported by Musician’s Company and the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation for his commencing year of study. Away from the stage, he is a staunch supporter of his beloved Manchester United.
