Marjorie Hulme 1922 ~ 2024

In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Old Girl Marjorie Hulme.

Here is a tribute written by her former colleague, Ruth Neal;

"For some of us it is our very good fortune to have known Miss Marjorie Hulme. In my case, she appointed me to Withington Girls’ School to teach Biology in 1982. I stayed until I retired in 2000.

She was educated at Bury Grammar School and read Mathematics and Moral Sciences at Girton College Cambridge. While there she was stroke in the Cambridge University Women’s Rowing eight. After teaching at the Collegiate School, Blackpool, and Wade Deacon Grammar School, Widnes, Miss Hulme became Headmistress of Leigh Girls’ Grammar school at the youthful age of 32. In 1961 she was appointed Headmistress of Withington Girls’ School, Manchester where she stayed until her retirement in 1985. [...]

I think few of us can have had as many meaningful touches with so many people during our lives. Towards the end of her long life she seemed to handle her physical limitations with dignity and grace, partly thanks to the help of Janet and family and to the staff at Peony Court. As I said at the start, those of us who knew her have been fortunate to receive such a helpful example in the life of Marjorie Hulme."

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Marjorie’s family and friends at this time.
