Betty Starkey 1937 ~ 2024 (Teacher of History)

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Mrs Betty Starkey, retired History Teacher. Betty passed away peacefully on 19th June 2024.

Bettys health and mobility had declined over the past two years and sadly after a fall in December 2023, her health declined considerably. Despite this she continued always to give a smile. Betty spent the last few months in the Arkwright Unit, Carders Court, Rochdale where she was cared for by the staff.

She studied History at Hull University, on completing her time at Hull she took up her first teaching job at Bury Grammar School for Girls. Betty taught History to 16 to 18 year olds and, in her own words she taught 1st year students Geography – very badly. Betty stayed at BGS for all her teaching life and retired approximately 22 years ago.

School trips to events, exhibitions and places of interest were a feature of her life. School plays saw her involved in costume making, and writing and performing in the staff “Raves” even staged when Heads retired.

Betty loved her years at Bury Grammar School and often spoke about her pupils, especially the ones who have become famous over the years.

A Cremation service took place on Thursday 4th July 2024 at Rochdale Crematorium.
