We regret to inform you of the death of Alan Round on 21st August 2025, age 87.  Alan was a pupil at BGS from 1947-1955 and a keen sportsman, with achievements in swimming, the javelin and he was a member of the succesful CCF Shooting Team. Alan can be seen in the photograph below, back row, 3rd from the right.

On leaving school he worked in chemistry at Transparent Paper at Heap Bridge before doing his National Service in the Royal Signals. On retirement his interest in the military led him to research WW1 campaigns and the involvement of the Lancashire Fusiliers. The discovery of a diary kept by his Uncle Percy during the horrendous Gallipoli campaign was a great source of interest for him.  Alan's father Harry and his 5 brothers were also pupils at BGS in the early 1900s and their father (Alan's grandfather) Andrew Chambers Round, known as Daddy Round, was a teacher at the school from 1904 -1926.

Alan loved outdoor pursuits and was an outstanding fisherman. He contributed many reports and articles to the Trout and Salmon Magazine. His obituary is included in the 70th Anniversary edition of the magazine.
