In Memoriam

We are deeply saddened to report the passing of Old Boy, John Clegg (Class of 1963) on 16th March 2026.

John Graham Clegg, Howlett House, 1957-1963

John Clegg (Cleggy) started his schooling at BGS in Transitus, from Christ Church School, Walmersley. We first met on the bus to Bury on the first day of Senior School and have been life-long friends ever since. He was in the CCF and wore pyjama bottoms under his uniform trousers because he found them itchy! John left BGS after ‘O’ Levels and became a Credit Controller at Bensons Sweets. Later he worked as an IT/Business Consultant and then became Office Manager at Mayfield Chicks, run by Peter Haslam. He worshipped at Christ Church, Walmersley where he was in the Choir under Arthur Smith and was a valued member of the church community. Later he joined Bury Parish Church Choir. He learned to play the piano and organ late in life and was a relief organist at many local churches. He assisted Ronald Frost by ‘turning pages’ for his recitals. We were subscribers of the Huddersfield Choral Society for many years and attended many Halle Concerts and recitals at the Bridgewater Hall. He ‘trod the boards’ with Holcombe Players and Summerseat Players and was a keen Theatre-goer. John was on the Governing Body of Springside Primary and was Chairman for several years.

He was a very kind and thoughtful gentleman, and his sense of humour was appreciated by his family and his many friends and contacts. Unfortunately he suffered from ill health for the last few years and his passing will leave many people very sad and bereft. He was a true gentleman and a gentle man.

Stuart Birtwell BGS 1958-1966

Our thoughts are with John's family and friends at this sad time.
