Bury Grammar School - Spring Music Recitals 2023

School News

Music infuses every aspect of our School and is an integral part of our every day.

We aim to develop the potential of every pupil, no matter what their musical abilities may be. Pupils with musical talent are encouraged by the whole school community to flourish and to achieve great things.

In light of this, here at Bury Grammar School we were delighted to be invited to perform in the prestigious Parish Church recital series this March. We presented the recitals on 10th and 17th March 2023.

In a new step for The School, pupils in the Primary Division performed in the concerts for the first time.

On the 10th of March, we woke up to deep snow and there was some initial doubt as to whether the recitals would even take place. However, with true BGS determination, all 15 performers made it to the church on time and the standard of the performers was exceptional. The recital began with the Brass Ensemble directed by Mr Golding and finished with the Flute Quartet, directed by Mrs Brownlow. Kate's (Year 11) performance of Dohnanyi's challenging 3rd Rhapsody was a highlight, as was Leila's (Year 13) performance of Bizet's Habanera from the opera Carmen. Leila goes on to study singing at Trinity College in September when her Sixth Form studies are complete.

The recital on 17th March involved 40 pupils from our Primary Division as well as nine Senior Soloists. Mrs Dickson (BGS Teacher of Music) conducted the Junior String Orchestra and Junior Choir. This was a fabulous opportunity for our younger pupils to show off their talents. It was especially pleasing that the church was completely full for the recital.  Katie (Year 13), the BGS Music Captain gave a thrilling performance of Rutter's Suite Antique. Katie has been a brilliant support to the Music department since she was in the Primary Division and is a very promising flautist.

Many thanks to all the whole team who made these concerts possible and our special thanks goes to the Parish Church for inviting us.
