During the recent half term, Bury Grammar School (BGS) embarked on an adventurous school trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Ninety-nine enthusiastic pupils and twelve dedicated members of staff set out on an unforgettable eight-day adventure, to take part in the first overseas sports tour of its kind.
The trip brought together our pupils from various sporting disciplines, including football, rugby, netball, golf, and swimming, uniting them in their love for sport and adventure.
Our Director of Sport, Mrs Miller, explained,
The tour began in the city of Dubai where pupils quickly adapted to the vibrant way of life and their beautiful surroundings. The netball teams, full of determination and spirit participated in the Saxo Tournament, with the U16 team finishing in a commendable third place. Meanwhile, the other teams enjoyed a memorable training session at the famous DESS (Dubai English Speaking School).
In between the rigorous training sessions and competitive fixtures, the tour party also embraced the UAE’s cultural wonders! A desert safari allowed pupils to connect with the stunning city, while the iconic Dubai Mall proved to be a popular location, and a thrilling evening was spent at the world-renowned Formula 1 track at Yas Marina, where pupils cycled around the incredible venue, creating lasting memories.
The rugby teams triumphed with a memorable victory over the Dubai Hurricanes and displayed resilience in a close match against Dubai College. The U16 Football team showcased their skills by securing three consecutive victories against local clubs and schools.
Our golfers had the privilege of teeing off at some of Dubai’s finest courses, including the Faldo Course, Arabian Ranches and The Trump National. Meanwhile the Swim team travelled to DESS to compete in the competitive Gala and battled impressively against their opponents, GEMS Wellington.
The tour’s finale was a visit to the YAS Waterworld – a fabulous end to a successful journey.
