On March 15th, the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) of Bury Grammar School (BGS) proudly participated in a Field Day and Biennial Inspection.

Our CCF contingent stands as a beacon of strength and tradition, boasting a membership of two hundred and fifty officers and cadets. Renowned as one of the largest and most historic CCF Contingents in the country, Bury Grammar School's commitment to excellence is emitted through its longstanding legacy within the CCF community.

This year, we were privileged to welcome Air Vice-Marshal Shaun Harris CBE, Director Support and Chief Engineer of the RAF, as our distinguished Inspecting Officer.

The day began with a meticulous Inspection of Cadets, accompanied by a March led by the Corps of Drums. Our esteemed guests were then treated to a buffet lunch, followed by engaging Cadet activities, and a final parade.

From Drone Flying and Virtual Reality Flying demonstrations courtesy of the RAF section to interactive sessions on Leadership, First Aid, and Fieldcraft, each stand showcased the skills and expertise of our cadets and Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs). It was a testament to their dedication and proficiency in various aspects of military training and leadership.

Following the final parade, we took a moment to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of our individual pupils. We are delighted to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mykola (Year 12) for being honoured with the Silver Cyber Award, Chloe (Year 13) for her accomplishment as GP Rifle Marksman, Cole (Year 11) for his well-deserved promotion to Cadet Sergeant, and Sophie (Year 12) for her advancement to the esteemed rank of Master Cadet. Each of these accomplishments reflects their dedication, skill, and commitment to excellence, and we are immensely proud of their achievements.

We are also thrilled to share the outstanding news that Mrs Grace Mehta, our esteemed CCF Contingent Commander, received a well-deserved promotion during the inspection. Mrs Mehta's unwavering dedication and remarkable service, spanning 21 years, have earned her the prestigious rank of Wing Commander, the highest honour attainable for a volunteer within the Air Cadets. This promotion stands as a  testament to Mrs. Mehta's tireless commitment and invaluable contributions to the organisation. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to  her on this exceptional achievement!

Contingent Commander, Wg Cdr Grace Mehta (RAFAC) said,

“It was a proud moment for the CCF at BGS to invite Air Marshal Harris and other guests to our first Inspection Day for 5 years. The cadets were a credit to the School and the CCF, putting on a brilliant display of their skills and knowledge during the day. It is an honour and a privilege to lead the unit and I look forwarding to celebrating many more achievements at Bury Grammar School.”

This has been a busy year for the CCF at School and cadets have taken part in camps at Altcar Ranges, Inskip Activity Centre, National Air and Space Camp and even helping at the Royal International Air Tattoo. Cadets have relished in further opportunities such as flying at RAF Woodvale, First Aid qualifications and various cyber courses. Thank you to all pupils, students, staff, Governors, and friends of The School for making the day such a success and for their unwavering support.

The values of respect, discipline and teamwork which it represents reflect our whole school ethos and the development and leadership opportunities afforded to our cadets are quite simply outstanding. We are so proud of all the pupils, teachers and support staff who make Bury Grammar School's CCF a beacon of inspiration and thrilled that Contingent Commander Grace Mehta, in her first year in role, has overseen such a successful inspection and won a promotion to the role of Wing Commander.  The sense of community among our pupils and their pride in the School was palpable during the inspection and is something to be cherished. I do hope younger pupils will look up at our CCF and aspire to become members themselves one day.”
