What an honour. The Band of the Grenadier Guards, one of the oldest and most iconic military bands in the world, visited Bury Grammar School on 2nd April 2025.
The Guards generously dedicate their day to working with our pupils, offering their expert musical and career advice. The day featured several musical performances and workshops for pupils across the whole school, culminating in a concert for invited guests, local dignitaries, friends of the school, and members of local organisations.
The visit provided a unique opportunity for our pupils to engage with one of the British Army’s most prestigious regiments, particularly for those interested in musical or military careers.
In the morning, performances were given during assembly for pupils in Years 7 and 8, as well as for our Primary Division, Years 1 to 6. Following these performances, a group of around 40 pupils attended a Careers talk led by members of the Grenadier Guards. This session was invaluable for those considering a military career, offering insight into the diverse opportunities available within the Armed Forces. Pupils also took part in an informative Q&A session, where they were able to find out more about life in the military.
Throughout the day, the Grenadier Guards worked alongside our Concert Band plus visiting pupils from Derby High School, delivering a masterclass that both challenged and inspired our young musicians. A particular highlight was when members of the Guards marched with our CCF Corps of Drums, an unforgettable experience for all involved.
For the concert performance, BGS was delighted to welcome many special guests, including representatives from visiting schools, local care homes, the Blind Society, the Mayor of the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, and the Lord Lieutenant. The concert, featuring our Concert Band and Corps of Drums alongside the Grenadier Guards, was an exceptional showcase of talent and musical excellence and a true honour for our pupils to be a part of.
The day concluded with a lovely tea reception, where members of the Grenadier Guards, CCF cadets, and guests gathered to reflect on a truly inspiring day.
Mrs Mehta, Head of Extra Curricular Activities, Teacher of Geography, CCF Contingent Commander said,
“What a fabulous day with Grenadier Guards the CCF cadets had. In a once in a lifetime experience, they were treated to a marching band performance from the Guards before the Drill Sergent inspected their uniform and taught drill before all the cadets marched with the Guards. The Corps of Drums lead the parade and showed off their impressive drum skills. The corps of Drums performance in the afternoon performance was the perfect ending to a great day. The cadets shone and did the CCF proud!"
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Band of the Grenadier Guards for taking the time to visit our school and for sharing your expertise. Your visit has left a lasting impression on our pupils and is a day we will never forget.
Mrs Anderson, Principal, told us at the end of the day,
“The visit from the Band of the Grenadier Guards today has been an enormous honour. Their engagement with our pupils - from Infants right through to Sixth Form - and with those from visiting schools was inspirational and for this we are thankful. Today certainly highlighted a shared love of music and was the perfect way for schools and organisations across Bury to come together. Today will be an experience many of these young people will never forget. The final concert this afternoon was truly sensational. Thank you so much to the Band for dedicating your time to us today, it was a real privilege and a day we all certainly remember for years to come.”
