Janet Thornton (Class of 1967) - A Lifetime of Leading Science and Innovation

Thank you to Janet for sharing your Career Profile and huge congratulations on the European Bioinformatics Institute's new Thornton Building!

Early Academic Journey
After being educated at Bury Grammar School, Janet Thornton’s journey into the world of molecular biology and bioinformatics began with her pursuit of a BSc in Physics at Nottingham University, followed by a PhD in Biophysics at the National Institute for Medical Research and King’s College, London. After a post-doc at Oxford's Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics, Janet embarked on an academic career that saw her taking roles at Birkbeck College, London, and later as a Professor at University College, London jointly with holding the prestigious Bernal Chair at Birkbeck.

Professional Milestones
Janet’s career trajectory took a significant turn when she became the Director of the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), which is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, at the Wellcome Genome Campus, Hinxton, near Cambridge. Under her leadership, from 2001 to 2015 EMBL-EBI grew from a modest team of 160 to a powerhouse of over 600 staff, significantly enhancing its role in the life sciences globally. The institute expanded its data resources from 5 to over 40 databases, playing a pivotal role in providing open data for researchers worldwide. The website of EMBL-EBI now handles over 115 million requests daily, a testament to its critical role in global research.

During her tenure, Janet oversaw the construction of new facilities aimed at fostering cooperation with academia and industry and translating data into societal benefits across various sectors, including therapeutics, biotechnology, agriculture, and the environment.

Janet was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2012 for services to bioinformatics. During her career she has held governance roles in the Royal Society, European Research Council and ELIXIR. Janet Thornton retired in 2023 but continues to be a regular visitor at EMBL-EBI.

In November 2024, EMBL-EBI moved into its new Thornton Building. Named after the institute’s Director Emeritus and esteemed scientist Janet Thornton, the building is a space for collaboration and translational research. The new space will help to turn EMBL EBI’s data management expertise into practical solutions for global challenges such as infectious disease, food insecurity and loss of biodiversity.

Retirement and Continued Contribution
Although now retired, Janet remains actively involved in the scientific community, contributing her vast experience and knowledge. Her days are filled with activities ranging from conducting research and programming to advising and mentoring. Away from this side of her life, when not working Janet loves spending time with her two children and three grandchildren.

Professional Philosophy and Achievements
Janet’s professional life is characterised by a robust work ethic, a talent for strategic thinking, and a knack for fostering international collaborations. Her greatest professional achievements include training numerous young scientists, publishing over 700 papers on proteins and their structures, and being elected a fellow of the Royal Society.

Reflections and Advice
Janet attributes her success to the solid foundation laid during her time at Bury Grammar School, where she developed a strong work ethic and the skills to work independently. Her advice to alumni beginning their careers is to pursue what they enjoy, be patient, and work diligently.

Cherished Memories
Looking back at her school days, Janet fondly remembers swimming in the pool, participating in school music competitions, and the lifelong friendships she forged. These experiences, combined with her academic and professional endeavors, paint a portrait of a life richly lived and dedicated to the advancement of science.
