Ted Roberts, class of 1944, celebrated his 100th birthday on May 8th. He marked this considerable milestone with his family and friends, also receiving a telegram from King Charles and Queen Camilla.
Ted was born in Rochdale and gained a scholarship to Bury Grammar School aged 11. He met his first wife, old girl Doris Coutie (class of 1945) on the train journey to School. At 18, Ted went to Liverpool University to study engineering, gaining a first class degree in metallurgy. He worked for a while in Stafford with English Electric but spent most of his life in Stamford, working as head of research at the Corby steelworks. He and Doris had three children.
Ted's daughter Hazel commented 'Dad does well for 100, but then he celebrated his 93rd birthday by travelling to Australia and riding a camel in Alice Springs'.
We wish Ted very many Happy Returns for his 100th birthday.
