January
Our Year 11 pupils and Year 13 students worked extremely hard in their mock examinations and later celebrated fantastic examination results in the summer, where their dedication certainly paid off!
February
We held our interviews for prospective Year 7's who then later joined The School in September. Here are some members of our Senior Team and our all-important pupil and student ambassadors.
March
Bury Grammar School pupils and teachers celebrated World Book Day in true style!
April
Our Primary Division was visited by The Inflatable Manchester Museum and their renowned Ancient Egyptian collection, as part of their History lessons.
May
For the first time since 2019 we were able to celebrate Founders’ Day fully this year. Founders’ Day is when we pause to say ‘thank you’ to our founders and donors for the wonderful education and great opportunities they have given to the young people of Bury and the local area.
...and of course our new prefect appointments were announced.
The Bury Grammar School’s Senior Prefect Team for 2022-23 is now:
Emily S - School Captain/Head Girl
Tommy K - School Captain/Head Boy
Rachel H - Vice Captain/Deputy Head Girl
Joe B - Vice Captain/Deputy Head Boy.
The roles of Head Girl/Head Boy/School Captains are highly honoured positions in our School. The tradition of Head Girl dates to 1906 and the role of School Captain for the Boys' dates back to as early as 1595.
June
Our Sports Days were filled with BGS spirit and comradery. Through our House System, pupils learn the joy and value of team participation, and the valuable lessons of dependability and having to give of your best. Pupils learn to win with modesty and accept defeat with good grace, and that participation is far more important than winning.
...and our exceptionally talented Primary Division pupils treated families to an outstanding performance of The Lion King in their summer show.
July
The much-awaited World Challenge expedition began their Borneo trek in July. We share a belief that by empowering our students to lead their own expedition, they will go on to live a life of courage, kindness and adventure. From experiencing new cultures to trekking in the wild, the day-to-day challenges of expedition life encourages students to develop life skills and build deeper confidence, resilience and empathy - and what an incredible experience this was!
Meanwhile back in school over the summer break our Estates Team and contractors were preparing for our new co-educational Primary Division where we now have one central modern base for all our primary pupils. Our pupils are thoroughly enjoying an exciting array of new facilities, including a bespoke new beautiful library at the heart of the School, brand-new play areas full of interesting resources to inspire young, inquisitive minds, new classrooms, and a grand new entrance and reception area to welcome everyone!
August
Results days for the Class of 2022 got off to a fabulous start with stellar A Level results. The class of 2022 achieved well over 100 A* and A grades between them; twenty-one students, over a quarter of the cohort, obtained a clean sweep of A and A* grades; half of our students reached the ‘gold standard’ with a suite of grades at B and above; and there was, once again, a perfect 100% pass rate.
A Level results were closely followed by equally fabulous GCSE results. More than 40% of all grades were stellar 9s and 8s (A**-A*), over 60% of results were at the very top level of 9-7s (A**-A) and more than 90% of grades were 9-5 (A**-B). In all, there were a magnificent 240 grade 9s (A**) and 690 grade 7-9s (A-A**): a superb constellation of top results!
September
We welcomed new pupils and students throughout the school, and thoroughly enjoyed our induction days for Reception, Year 7 and Year 12.
October
Open Day Autumn 2022. A large number of visitors were welcomed into school by our magnificent BGS ambassador pupils! During a visit to our school visitors no doubt heard about the core values of the School, what makes us unique, our aims and objectives and how we unlock the potential of every pupil, so they achieve academic success. A visit to school, and a tour from our pupils confirms what makes us special!
On 14th October 2022, we were delighted to hold the official opening ceremonies for our vibrant new co-educational Primary Division and The Courthouse, a new Academic Centre for Sixth Form.
November
Remembrance Day 2022. Always a dignified and much respected event at BGS. Over October half term the 29th Bury Grammar School Battlefields Tour visited the area of Ypres in Belgium. Taking place since 1994, and only interrupted by the Covid pandemic, the BGS Battlefields Tour is one of the longest-running school trips of its kind in the country, if not the world. The detail from this school trip formed the content of our assembly this year.
Bury Grammar School pupils were delighted to host ten German pupils who took part in the Bury-Cologne German Exchange, after a three-year break. We are already planning our return visit for autumn 2023, where we hope many more BGS pupils will take part!
December
In December we held a whole host of festive activities...
Congratulations to our Matilda cast and crew on a dazzling show - what a triumph! After two years, it was fantastic to finally see a return to normality for the school production. What better choice than Matilda the Musical Jr. to welcome us back.
From everyone at Bury Grammar School, we wish you a joyful Christmas, a relaxing break, and a very happy and healthy New Year!
