A New Head of Sixth Form for BGS

We are delighted to announce that Miss Jessica Sherriff will be the School's new Head of Sixth Form from September 2024, taking over from Mrs Holly Simmons after six years' outstanding service in this role.

Jessica has been appointed from a large and exceptionally well qualified and experienced field and following a rigorous recruitment process to which an external assessor and member of HMC (The Head’s Conference) was invited. Our new Head of Sixth Form brings with her a wealth of experience and a passion for education that aligns seamlessly with the ethos of our school. Her dedication to academic excellence and individual student development makes her an excellent addition to the School's Senior Leadership Team.

Our Sixth Form offers a pre-university experience encouraging independence alongside great care and support from teachers within small classes. It provides an academic and supportive environment where students can be themselves, thrive and achieve. Academic achievement is our central focus, and all students further develop their independent learning skills and self-directed research projects, so they leave us as happy and confident young people, with the knowledge and drive to achieve their potential.

Jessica Sherriff is an Old Girl of Bury Grammar School (BGS), leaving in 2014 to attend the University of Leeds where she graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Geography, before attending the University of Birmingham to complete a PGDipEd in Secondary Geography. Jessica began her teaching career in several schools across Birmingham and Northamptonshire, gaining an insight into the intrinsic link between exceptional pastoral care and outstanding academic progress through her role as a Leader of Learning. During this time, Jessica had the privilege of becoming an Early Career Teacher (ECT) subject mentor, helping to support newly qualified teachers within the profession, as well as liaising with partnership schools to share best practice throughout the region.

Jessica joined school again in 2022 as the Head of Year 7 Girls and a teacher of Geography. This year, Jessica has held the position of Head of Geography, utilising her insight as an AQA Examiner, and her love of the subject, to lead the department through the Secondary Geography Quality Mark process by the Geographical Association. During this time, Jessica has also held the role of Head of Year 10 Boys, overseeing their pastoral provision and academic progress, to ensure that pupils have a positive mindset and the skills to help them achieve their full potential.

Jessica is eager to embark on this new role and contribute to the continued success of Bury Grammar Sixth Form and told us,

In welcoming Jess to her new role, Mrs Anderson, Principal, expressed her confidence in Jessica’s ability to inspire and steer students and the Sixth Form team towards their goals and said,

Student Prefect roles play a vital role in the smooth functioning and positive atmosphere of our school community. Our current Year 13 School Captain, Jake G, told us,
