Appointment of Bury Grammar School's Director of Development

We are delighted to announce the appointment of our new Director of Development. Many congratulations to Mr Dave Newbury who will be taking up the post at the beginning of the Summer Term 2023.

The Director of Development is responsible for our bursary strategy, provision, allocation, campaigns and fundraising and for liaison with our alumni. Mr Newbury will be leading our development plans, based on our School’s founding principles, to enable as many children as possible to attend Bury Grammar School (BGS) irrespective of their families’ ability to pay and to enhance social mobility in all age groups.

Our Founders’ principles were forward-looking and centred on supporting the children of Bury (and now the wider area); Mr Newbury’s knowledge of our community – current pupils, parents, alumni, prominent local figures and businesspeople - and his business acumen will be important elements in leading this key area of Bury Grammar School’s 2030 Strategy as the Development Team aim to strengthen foundations which will support generations to come.

Mr Newbury, who has been a teacher at BGS for 15 years, will rescind his roles as Deputy Head of Sixth Form and Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Contingent Commander from the end of the Spring Term. Given the crucial links between school life and the Development Office, he will, however, continue to play a full part in the life of the school as a Business teacher and as a member of the SLT, retaining responsibility for prefects.

We all wish Mr Newbury the best in his new role, whilst Mrs Holly Simmons, Head of Sixth Form, and Ms Hannah Greene, Assistant Head of Sixth Form, will continue their excellent work as a two-person Sixth Form Leadership Team.

Dave Newbury told us:

“I am very excited at the prospect of bringing our Bury Grammar School community closer together. My many years teaching here has allowed me to see first-hand the life changing impact a bursary has, and I feel privileged to ensure that many more young people will continue to benefit from the generosity of others. A Bury Grammar School education really is a special thing, and something our alumni will never forget.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at our future events and building lasting relationships for the betterment of the School and future generations of BGS students, who in turn as a BGS alumni have incredibly bright futures.

Sanctas Clavis Fores Aperit.”
